Asian Flush or Asian Glow is a common reaction among East Asians, and small numbers of Caucasians, and ALL Native Americans. It is a condition which is characterized by a low tolerance for alcohol. Alcohol flush reaction, the more technical name, describes the body’s inability to break down ingested alcohol completely.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms are alcohol-induced, can range from mild to severe depending on the individual, and include:

- Redness and “flushing” of the face, neck, or body.

- A burning sensation of heat

- Splotchy redness on the neck, shoulders, and upper torso

- Dizziness/drowsiness

- Increased heart rate

- Shortness of breath and headaches.

The Cause of Asian Glow:

A person who suffers from Asian Glow has an inactive enzyme, Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which is normally responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, a byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol. Acetaldehyde is a toxin and if your body can’t break it down, it accumulates and causes flushing.

Asian Glow and Esophageal Cancer:

The effects might be more serious than just a red face. Researchers warn of a link between this condition and an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus from drinking alcohol.

The Public Library of Science reported that the more alcohol that people with this deficiency drink, the greater their risk. In Japan and South Korea, for example, many people have the deficiency but still drink heavily. Researchers found that these drinkers develop a form of esophageal cancer six to ten times more often than those without the deficiency. Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It can be treated when found early, but once it grows the chances of survival drop sharply.

Solution:

The best way to prevent this is don’t drink.

If you still choose to drink, try not to take hard liquor. Rather than drinking one shot of hard liquor, go for a beer, which has a lower alcohol content. Otherwise try mixing your hard liquor with something.

Drink slowly so that you do not overload your system with a lot of alcohol. Remember, before you drink you should drink lots of water and eat lots of food.

For the actual flushing, try wearing slightly heavier foundation when you intend to drink. This doesn’t fully cover the flushing though. Another tip is to wear clothing that has the color red or hot pink, so that your face will look less red by comparison. Always remember to listen to what your body is telling you. If you feel physically uncomfortable, stop drinking—it is for your own benefit!

Non-Alcoholic Party Drinks

When you plan your next get-together, don’t forget about your friends who don’t drink alcohol. Mocktails, simply cocktails without the alcohol, are a delicious and safe alternative to alcoholic beverages and are suitable for partygoers of all ages. Consider having a family-friendly party and provide some fun and festive mocktails for everyone to enjoy.

Here are some of my favorite drinks:

1. Screwdriver

Step 1: Fill a medium-sized glass with chipped ice. Screwdrivers are traditionally served over ice in a short glass.

Step 2: Pour ginger ale into the glass until is half full. You can substitute sparkling cider or soda if you prefer.

Step 3: Fill the rest of the way with your favorite brand of orange juice. Pulpier brands tend to work better at simulating a hard-core Screwdriver.

Step 4: Stir this concoction with a swizzle stick until the orange juice and ginger ale are fully blended. The non-alcoholic Screwdriver is nearly complete.

Step 5: Stick two cocktail straws into the glass. This completes the look of the virgin cocktail.

Step 6: Serve immediately. This drink is best when the ice cubes have not fully melted, diluting the juice and ginger ale.

2. Margaritas

Step 1: Pour the coarse salt onto a plate or saucer.

Step 2: Moisten the rim of a margarita glass with the lime wedge. Dip the glass into the salt until it coats the rim.

Step 3: Fill a margarita glass with ice and pour in the lemon-lime soda, sweet and sour mix and lime juice.

Step 4: Garnish with the lime.

You may be the one that people call “party poopers” or “light-weight drinker” but you will never be an alcoholic. Also, you will probably not suffer from cirrhosis or alcoholic hepatitis, or go broke from buying alcohol. Lastly, you might even live longer than the ones that do drink!

Never Ever Wear:

1. Stripper Heels and Mini Skirts/Shorts

First of all, showing too much skin  or flaunting too much of your good is just not that attractive. Plus, you don’t need to look like a hooker on your first date. So, please keep this outfit in your closet.

2. Super Low-Cut Mini Dress

It’s not a cleavage contest, so no need to wear a night club outfit on your first date. You can impress your breasts later if you pass this first date.

3. See through Tops/Bottoms

Its fine if you don’t wear a bra or panties. But PLEASE, if you ever do, make sure your top or bottoms are  not see through! I’ve seen girls wearing see through outfits, and its just totally disgusting!

4. Lazy Outfits

Come on, don’t be lazy. Don’t wear your pj’s and your sweatpants on your first date! Put some effort and impress your date!

5. Too Many Colors

Check the mirror before you step out of your house. Make sure the colors are matching, and not wearing too many colors!

How to Dress for a First Date?

The way you dress for a first date says a lot about who you are and provides some important visual clues to your partner. You want to look at your best and you don’t want to disappoint him.

Make sure:

1.You know where you are going: if it’s the beach, then dress up for the beach. If it’s a dinner date, make sure what you wear is appropriate for the dinner.

2.You are comfortable: The worst thing you could feel about yourself is ugly. Otherwise, you would feel self-conscious and horrible through-out the entire date.

3.You don’t dress the list above: Look at the pictures again if you need to.

How you choose to dress should show your date you respect him enough to make a good impression. It can also make you feel a lot more confident and relaxed on the date. Go with your own style, and be the unique one! Good luck on your first date!

While taking a friend to the night market in Feng Chia night market in Taiwan, I spotted so many different styles and colors of check shirts. I don’t think I own any check shirts, so this is what I got. Sort of cow-boyish looking! Let me know what you think of this style:

How to Make One?

It’s really simple, just follow these simple steps and you’ll have a nice handy purse of your own!

Things you will need:

1. Bra

2.Ribbon fringing or other trims and decoration (up to you!)

3.Hot clue or craft glue

4.Scissors

Recylce your bras!

Step 1:

Start by removing the straps from the cup.

Step 2:

Keep the cups together if you have the type of bra that allows it. If you separate the cups, simply glue them back together along the wire line.

Step 3:

Glue the cups together to form the pouch part of the purse. This bra was slightly open-cupped (deep plunge line) so it was glued up the side to form a deeper pouch.

Step 4:

Glue the straps back on to form the handles. This can be short or long depending on the bag style. Use the actual bra straps to keep the purse “Bra Looking” or use a ribbon or a cord instead. Attach them to the top of the bra where the straps would normally sit.

Step 5:

Finally, you can embellish your new bag by gluing on a variety of trims, ribbons, and sequins to your desired style.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease, caused by influenza type A which infects pigs. There are many types, and the infection is constantly changing. Until now it has not normally infected humans, but the latest form clearly does. Swine flu can be spread from person to person and probably through coughing and sneezing.

How to Stay away from swine flu?

1. Wash your hands often:  Antibacterial hand wash is excellent at eliminating the threat of flu and many other viruses and bacteria.
2. Cover your mouth with your elbow when cough or sneeze
3. Avoid touching eyes nose or mouth
4. Fashionable Surgical masks
   People are frightened, and will look wherever they can to prevent catching win flu or prevent from spreading it. Swine flu masks are currently the number one seller in woman’s apparel, beating out another strapped accessory: the bra. Everywhere I go, everyone is wearing it. It’s the new trend!

But the only annoying part is when there is a downpour, it would suck big time. I was told last night that the weather would suck today. But I didn’t think it was going to be that bad until I woke up this morning to raindrops. I mean, I can easily manage to this heavy drizzle since it wasn’t a real rain. All I needed to do was to put on some rain-boots, raincoats and some water proof pants then I’m good to go. Only a minute after I started my scooter it started pouring badly. I was thinking of either turning back, or keep on going (thinking that the rain might stop at some point). So, I decided to keep on going. I didn’t want to miss work again, since I called-in sick last week.

Rainy day in Taiwan

A crack of thunder and a bolt of lightning strike just above me, and the rain came down like a waterfall. My make-up was smudged by the heavy rain, and the mud splattered up above my knees. I knew I had to find a place to stop, because the wind almost blew me away. I carefully stopped at a gas station; I could barely see what’s in front of me. I knew then I had to turn back, but with this rain it seemed impossible.

I took out my phone from my scooter trunk to call my students to cancel today’s lesson. As I waited for the rain to stop, I realized I wasn’t even wearing my rain boots. My precious black flats were soaked up from the rain and dirt. Looking through my scooter’s mirror, my eyeliner and mascara were dripping down my face. I felt so annoyed, and just wanted to be in the shower.  Finally, the rain was slowing down a bit, I started riding back home. It was already flooding which makes it even harder for me to drive.

I am still alive, I made him home safe (Thank Buddha!) I quickly got into the hot shower to freshen up again. Thinking that lightening never strikes twice- It will all be fine. The rain was still pouring, but at noon I have a class to attend. Which means:

1. Water-proof makeup

A water proof eyeliner and mascara will prevent from smudging.
I use:

• water-proof Maybelline mascara
• Bobbi Brown eye-liner

I will leave the eye-shadow behind for a rainy day. Eyeliner and mascara will do!

2. Shorts and Flip-flops or Rain Boots)

It was very stupid of me wearing jeans today. It was soaked and very uncomfortable to wear it on a rainy day. I think shorts and flip-flops are perfect. But then, flip-flops are actually bad for your feet on a day like this. If you don’t wear rain boots you’re going to end up with soaked legs and feet all day. And nobody wants that. Due to my laziness, I will stick to flip flops for now!

3. Umbrella

Very important to own an umbrella! I have a pink one, and I love it. I’ve seen some people with cute designs of umbrella. I’ll consider of getting that one day.

4. Walk

I left my scooter behind and walked to school (which wasn’t too far away). I was safe and didn’t get too wet!

Tressa and her flip-flops, she was afraid to get her nice shoes wet. She also need to get a new pair of rain boots! Arthur says he will stick to his sneakers since flip-flops will look to sloppy for school.

Not because these girls needs glasses, but because these glasses helps them look trendy. For me, I refuse to wear glasses and it makes me look like a geek! But for these Asian girls, they believe it makes their eyes bigger and smarter? You decide!

Then, I went to the hair salon. Turned my hair super black, and straightened it! I’m actually happy about if for the first time. The salon and the shopping took pretty much the whole day. Which made my day superb!

So, here’s my plan for the weekend.  I just booked my ticket back to the land of smiles. I’m taking a break from school and work and going to this party in Bangkok. The Okizoo is having a party at BKK RAW at Club Glow Bangkok on Friday April 10th. I got my new dancing shoes, and my new hair style to shake my stress out for the weekend!
